Professional Qualifications

  • Degree in Theology from Oxford University

  • Certificate in Ecumenical Studies from Geneva University

  • 50 years in ordained ministry, 25 years a bishop (Bishop of Dorking 1996-2015)

Professional and Voluntary Roles (past and present)

  • Chaplain at independent school (Bryanston) teaching languages mainly, 1974-80

  • Chair of Governors of large primary school (450 pupils) in Haywards Heath, 1988-1995

  • Member of Governing Council of St John’s School, Leatherhead, 1997-2015

  • Close liaison with Director of Education in Guildford diocese throughout my time as bishop, especially in connection with establishing The Good Shepherd Trust, which now comprises 16 schools in the diocese.


Now in retirement I chair the Retired Clergy Association of the Church of England, a national body that supports clergy in their valued continuing ministry in retirement. I enjoy playing golf having made the transition from cricket some years ago.  I speak French and German and dabble in Italian.  I am married and have two sons and four grandchildren, in whose education I take a keen interest.
